Traffic Rules for Trucks

Many drivers switch from a passenger car to a truck. They step on the gas pedal out of habit, not knowing that the rules are different. Let us look at the speed limits for trucks in Kyrgyzstan to help you avoid a fine.

The biggest mistake drivers make is thinking that all trucks are the same. The traffic rules of Kyrgyzstan divide trucks by weight: under 3.5 tons and over 3.5 tons. Your speed limit on the highway depends on this weight listed in your vehicle registration.

Traffic Rules of the Kyrgyz Republic, Section 10.3

Outside cities and towns, the allowed speeds are:

  • Trucks under 3.5 tons: on freeways — not more than 110 km/h, on other roads — not more than 90 km/h.
  • Trucks over 3.5 tons: on freeways — not more than 90 km/h, on other roads — not more than 70 km/h.

1. Light trucks (under 3.5 tons)

These include Category B vehicles (for example, Gazelles, compact vans, and pickup trucks).

In cities and towns
60 km/h
Highways
90 km/h
Freeways
110 km/h

2. Heavy trucks (over 3.5 tons)

These are semi-trucks, Kamaz trucks, dump trucks, and large vans of Category C and CE. They must not drive as fast as passenger cars.

In cities and towns
60 km/h
Highways
70 km/h
Freeways
90 km/h

3. Special cases (for all trucks)

Towing

When towing another vehicle, the maximum speed is 50 km/h everywhere.

People in the truck bed

When carrying people in the truck bed, your speed must not exceed 60 km/h.

Residential Area

In courtyards and residential areas (sign 5.38), the speed limit is 10 km/h.

Important to know about fines
  • Penalty threshold: In Kyrgyzstan, you get a traffic ticket for speeding if you go 11 km/h or more over the limit (Art. 187 of the Code of Offenses of the KR).
  • For semi-trucks: On most roads in Kyrgyzstan, the speed limit for Category C is 70 km/h. Driving at 81 km/h will already result in a fine of 1,000 soms.
  • Freeways: Currently, Kyrgyzstan has no roads officially marked with sign 5.1. Therefore, the 70 km/h limit is the main speed limit for driving a semi-truck out of town.
